Colin Powell and Jhumpa Lahiri, both shaverren of immigrants, had to grow up as the others in an America that made them feel singled timber up because of their lams. Colin Powell grew up where washing did not seem to affair and as an adult intentional otherwise, while Jhumpa Lahiri grew up in a world where she was constantly aware of how contrary she was, and learned as an adult that that is acceptable. Although race is an issue that has been and still is a major(ip) stumbling block of our world today, both Colin Powell and Jhumpa Lahiri have overcome this soil and grown into adults with mindsets of which, although are varied, contain a certain symmetricalness people should strive for in their lives. Colin Powell is the son of Jamaican immigrants Luther and Maud Powell. In his home growing up, his family never let their race or pover y constrain them. He was raised in the Bronx, which had numerous families of different races, so he never even thought of race as an issue. In The Good Soldier, Powell declares that he never really knew [he] was supposed to feel in some way heavy(a) by being an inner-city, public school black boor (147).

Outside of the Bronx however, he learned that other people, both new-fashioned and old, are not as accepting as his family and go with is. Powell soon joined the army, where they only cared if one was a good soldier. Powell quickly moved up in the ranks. Like Colin Powell, Jhumpa Lahiri was the child of im migrant parents. She was born in London, rai! sed in Rhode Island, and her parents were Bengali, from India. For all of Lahiris childhood, she insipid up singled out, and hid her heritage from her American friends. Lahiri felt tremendous oblige to be loyal to India, and the same tremendous pressure to inflate as an American citizen. She always felt as though she neglect short at both attempts.
